Field Trip Suggestion
1. Meet at Gazebo. With kids sitting in the circle of the gazebo, tell them the story of the Forest----read or paraphrase from the story provided. Help them understand that the Forest represents “World Friendship through Flying,” which is the motto of the 99’s, the organization of women pilots.
2. Now that the students understand why the Forest exists, it’s time to learn a little bit about aviation. Tell the kids there are four forces of flight.
· In order for something to fly, science tells us that there must be certain forces at work.
o Lift
o Drag
o Thrust
o Weight (the Force of Gravity)
· Think of flying a paper airplane. When you fold your airplane, you fold some wings that allow air to flow faster over the plane than under the plane (lift).
· The back of the plane, perhaps where there are some small flaps, there is some resistance (drag).
· In order to get your plane into the air, you push it with your hand (thrust). How is thrust provided for a space rocket? (Boosters).
· Finally, anything that flies has weight (gravity).
3. Time to make a rocket and see the four forces of flight.
· Need two straws, one with a large opening and one with a small opening. Make your rocket on the LARGE straw.
· Lay the post-it note on one end of the large staw, with some paper hanging off. Wrap the paper around the straw. Then squeeze the top of the paper into a cone. . Make sure it is tight – you tape if needed. You should be able to blow through your straw with no air coming out at the cone.
· Ready to fly?
o Insert small straw inside the largestraw. Do not aim at any person. Choose a target and blow into the small straw and watch your rocket soar!
· Think like an engineer. How can you make your straw rocket even better. Some fins? A little weight? Maybe a paper clip or a piece of wikki stick? More tape?
